John Leo: Christmas censors
I'm interested to know what people think of the banning of references to Christmas in public schools. I think it's ridiculous. I don't equate a Choir Christmas concert to state sponsored religion. What's so wrong with a celebration that reflects the view of a great majority of Americans and that has gone on for years. It would make more sense to me if they stopped giving a vacation from school rather than punish kids for saying "Merry Christmas." Why is that so offensive?

You're right about this "trend" becoming absurdly ridiculous. The only problem I see is when a public school is exclusionary, as in they have a celebration solely regarding Christmas. Growing up, our school would always have Holiday festivities that were dominated by Christmas songs and traditions, but would still include the celebrations around this time of year of other cultures as well. Even though I celebrated Christmas, I enjoyed learning about other cultures during this time. Hmmm, learning. Sounds like something that should be associated with school, huh?
