Jay Bryant: What Did Rather Know, and When Did He Know It?
As one radio commentator said, the forgery issue involved with these documents is a bigger story than what Bush may have done during the time period in question. Isn't it a pretty big deal when someone tries to win the presidency, the highest office in the land, through forgery, lies, and deceit?
Rather be wrong
"Meanwhile, Dan Rather has dug in for dear life, ridiculing his critics and dismissing pretty much anyone who has eyes to see the truth as a 'partisan,' while the CBS front office continues to break off bits of it credibility like a man who feeds an alligator one body part at a time. A CBS spokeswoman told the Post: 'In the end, the gist is that it's inconclusive. People are coming down on both sides, which is to be expected when you're dealing with copies of documents.' Translation: We can't prove the source is true, but you can't prove it's not.
Well, since this is the new standard, I would like to announce my next column topic right now: Dan Rather has eaten fifteen German Shepherds in the last year alone and he considers himself the Warrior King of the planet Blarnack. I have just printed out documents that back up my story. It is for CBS to prove me wrong." Jonah Goldberg - Townhall.com

I'm sorry, but that made me laugh. I'm a cynic. I think it's politics as usual, on both sides. Unfortunately.
I agree. Both sides resort to dirty tricks, thus turning off the entire electorate. Rather than raise the level of debate, all we get is mudslinging. Personally, I don't think Bush and Kerry are even actively involved in the dirty play. There are all too many people out there that will take it upon themselves to influence this election.
One thing that really confuses me about these forged documents -- everyone associated with the National Guard at the time these documents were allegedly typed agree that they are forgeries. However, they also agree that the forgeries accurately reflect the thinking of all of the parties involved, including the existence of a "CYA" file designed to document the pressure brought to bare in protecting Bush and the other politically protected members of this particular guard unit.
So the documents are fake, but they're truthful.
That's a new one.
So would either of you like to see Kerry release his records? Or do we just have to take his word for things. I heard that there are some real documents that have come out that aren't too good for Bush, but everyone is all caught up talking about the forged ones.
I'd still like it if the political debate could at least be about things that have happened in my lifetime.
